Book Title- Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself
Written by- Judy Blume
Copyright Date- 1977
298 pages
This story is mainly about Sally J. Freedman. She is 10 years old and in 5th grade. When her brother gets very sick, her mother, brother and her move to Florida for winter. She doesn't like her new school at first, but she learns to enjoy it more each day. She becomes friends with Andrea, a 6th grader, and two girls in her grade, Shelby and Barbara.
This story takes place in New Jersey at first. But the story takes us to Florida. The time is in the 1940's, when World War II is now ending. Sally can use the phone but it's very expensive and they can drive in a car but they don't own one. Some of the places this story takes place is at Sally's apartment, school, at the park, and at swim practice.
The major problem is Sally is afraid that her father will die. She thinks this because her father is the same age as his brothers when they died, age 42. The other major problem is that Sally thinks Mr. Zavodsky, an old man in her building, is Adolf Hitler. She thinks this because he looks similar to him. She believes he has moved to Florida to retire and that he is planning to take over the world from his home.
I recommend this book because it is an entertaining biography. But, it is also a historical biography. This makes it interesting because it can teach you about the war while still entertaining you. I would recommend this book to middle school kids. I really enjoyed this story so I hope you'll read and enjoy it too.
